Long duration balloons planned during HIBISCUS aim at providing a global view on the geographical distribution of clouds, water vapour and chemical species around the world, with a combination of:
in situ measurements of meteorology, ozone and water vapour on constant level super-pressure balloons at and immediately above the tropopause (80 and 60 hPa). HIBISCUS will benefit from the heritage of the developments performed within the frame of the STRATEOLE/VORCORE experiment supported by CNRS, CNES and the US National Science Foundation (NSF);
remote sensing in the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere of temperature, aerosol and of chemical composition from Infra-Red Montgolfier flying at 24-27 km. This vehicle has been developed by CNES from a concept defined in 1977 at CNRS Service d'aéronomie. More information on this fully operational vehicle can be found on the CNES WEB site.
Long duration balloons will be operated by the CNES Balloon Division in cooperation with IPMet/UNESP .
